Town Hall for School Districts - Avoiding School Board Meeting Chaos
Over the course of the past several weeks, school boards around the country have faced increasingly contentious meetings that have evolved from low attendance and low fanfare discussion to full-fledged grudge matches between various factions of citizens advocating to advance their interests, whether it be with respect to instructional delivery models, curriculum matters (such as CRT), and of course, masking. These issues have unfortunately detracted from the important business of the boards and resulted in many communities experiencing a not-so-pleasant social media presence. The School Law Section at von Briesen has assembled a panel of speakers to address the myriad legal challenges school boards must be prepared to address. We want to help you navigate the legal and public relations challenges so your boards are able to focus on the important issues impacting our kids' education.
Our panel will discuss:
- Open Meetings Law Requirements, including appropriate notice
- Strategies for managing meetings, including how to effectively address the chaos should it unfortunately occur
- Appropriate processes for board discussion and action
- First Amendment considerations related to speech by community members through signs, clothing, and commentary during public comment
We encourage you to bring your questions on these areas, or any area, for the panel to address.
