Form I-9 Revisions Require Immediate Employer Compliance

The United States Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) recently revised the Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification Form. The revision date of the new version is June 5, 2007, which is located in the bottom right corner of the new form. As described in detail below, USCIS made minor changes to the instructions to Section 1 and made more substantive changes to the list of acceptable List A documents. Additionally, the new form may require new procedures when rehiring employees or completing the reverification process. Employers have until December 25, 2007 to begin using the new Form I-9. Accordingly, employers should ensure compliance of all its domestic facilities by this date or will risk penalties for non-compliance.
