Summer Associates

We are no longer accepting applications for the 2025 Summer Associate program.

We are proud of our Summer Associate Program, which takes place in our flagship Milwaukee office. Our goal is to offer all of our Summer Associates a real-life picture of the practice of law and a position with us upon completion of law school. We invest deeply in our Summer Associates’ training and development and are committed to advancing their success.

Recruiting

von Briesen seeks driven law students with a history of academic success, strong interpersonal skills, a commitment to excellence both inside and outside the office, leadership attributes, and a desire to make von Briesen home. We recruit candidates from diverse law schools and strongly encourage qualified women, minorities, Veterans, individuals with disabilities, and members of the LGBTQ+ community to apply.

Our Inclusive Culture

We are personable, professional and enjoy working together to understand our clients’ needs and provide unparalleled service in meeting their expectations. Summer Associates are immediately part of our team. We work with each individual Summer Associate to identify their interests and help tailor their experience to make the most of their summer with the firm.

Exposure To A Variety Of Practice Areas

You will have the opportunity to experience the firm’s various practice areas through a carefully planned rotating schedule. Each rotation in a practice group is approximately four weeks and concludes with substantive reviews to provide Summer Associates with feedback on their work product and overall performance. You will attend internal section meetings to meet members of the team, learn more about their practices, and identify personal areas of interest. What better way to explore many areas of the law?

More Than Just Researching

You will be involved in actual client matters assigned directly by shareholders. Your work will help make a difference for our clients. You will also have opportunities to learn through experiencing wide-ranging activities. These include attending client meetings, court appearances, mediations, depositions, trials, and closings. You can also assist with pro bono projects in areas that interest you. Projects are similar to those that new associates work on at the firm.

Attorney Mentors

Each Summer Associate is matched with an attorney mentor. Your mentor will help integrate you into the firm, offer continued guidance throughout the summer, and ensure that your experience with von Briesen is meaningful to you.

Training

Extensive training is provided to expose you to the inner-workings of our firm and to equip you with the technology and tools you need to have a successful summer. In fact, training extends throughout your time at von Briesen including: how to be a successful Summer Associate, internal versus external stakeholder communication, legal writing, and more.

Social Interaction

We believe it is important to spend time with our colleagues in and out of the office. Social events are scheduled throughout the summer, such as lunches with associates, informal lunches with shareholders, cocktail hours and dinners at Milwaukee’s great restaurants, and attending the arts, baseball games, concerts, and the firm summer picnic. As weather allows, we try to schedule these events outside, because who wouldn’t want to soak up the beautiful Wisconsin summer?

Environment

Our approach to work is decidedly contemporary. We offer business appropriate casual attire every day of the week. The divisions between associates and shareholders are less rigid here than in more traditional firms. Doors are open and communication is too.
