Wisconsin’s Fire Prevention Code adopts the standards of the National Fire Protection Association. NFPA 1 prohibits the use of many grills on condominium balconies.
Under the NFPA regulations, you cannot use a gas or charcoal grill on your balcony if your condominium building is multi-family (has 3 or more units), you live above ground level (usually the 2nd floor or higher), and your balcony is made of combustible material (like wood). Charcoal grills cannot be used on a ground-level wooden patio.
So, what can you do to enjoy grilling at your condo? Your association may designate a grilling area 10 feet or more from the building. You can also use an electric grill, which is not affected by the prohibition.
