Public Sector Town Hall: Being A Good Board Member
-
Webcast
Public-sector elected Council and Board members play a crucial visionary role in shaping the policies, programs, and services that affect the daily lives of their community’s stakeholders. Board members serve as good shepherds in the community and help to realize the goals of the Board as a whole. But with that responsibility comes challenges—both foreseeable and avoidable—that Board members must navigate.
Our panel will discuss legal and ethical obligations of officeholders, the distinctions between policy-making authority of the governmental body and administration’s day-to-day management of the organization, and the importance of communication skills and how to work and serve effectively with other board members, administration, and community members. Our panel will also discuss the avoidable traps individual board members create for themselves, navigating the targets that get placed on them, and fulfilling the governing body’s big picture responsibilities. We encourage Board members to attend alongside a member of their administrative team.
